Devo / New Traditionalists

New Traditionalists is characterized by its shift towards a more minimalist, synth-pop sound and darker, more direct lyrics. The album title was a sarcastic appropriation of the name of a right-wing Japanese political group, as the band sought to create new traditions while moving away from the pop stardom they'd achieved with their previous album, Freedom of Choice. The album's visual aesthetic also changed, with the band adopting grey uniforms and plastic wigs.
